Christmas in the Western world is a time of reflection.
A lot of people take a rest during the festive season, take a step back and reflect.
It’s advisable to repeat this routine several times throughout the year.
One simple reflection technique that may be helpful is one I learned from a program manager I worked with several years ago.
We ran a big program to outsource application management services. And, as with all these programs, there were numerous issues to overcome: regulatory matters, requirements specification, finding the right expertise, etc.
As a relatively new project manager I would be bogged down in the details of such issues and racking my brain for solutions.
When raising those issues with my program manager he would often say “viewed from the moon this isn’t a big issue”, meaning that in the grand scheme of things I shouldn’t worry too much, together we would find a resolution.
“Viewed from the moon” is a metaphor for taking a step back or taking a “helicopter view” and look at a challenge from a distance. Viewed from such a distance a big problem looks surprisingly small.
Viewing a problem “from the moon” helps you see the issue from a different perspective. And it gives you breathing space that will allow the necessary oxygen to flow to your brain. The oxygen will help the brain with creating solutions.
I’d encourage you to apply this reflection technique in the new year.
Let me know if it is helpful. Or maybe share another technique that has helped you before.
Wishing you good health and success in 2024!
